It was a cold Sunday evening in
February, during shift change
down in the hole when I met
Firemen Ralph and Mike Geidel.
I asked them why they were not
on dinner break. After all, the
hole was empty and nothing was
going on. They explained to me they
were looking for their FDNY brother,
Gary Geidel, who was taken on 9-11.
Shift change was their preferred time
to dig as it is quiet and more private.
I understood where they were coming
from. Ground Zero is hallowed ground and
this quiet time allowed them to feel closer to
their brother, pictured on Ralph's helmet.
